Emergency & Critical Care Consulting

Critical Consults began consulting services in May 2014. At its inception, it was intended to meet the needs of overnight emergency doctors, but has since helped all levels of veterinarians from general practitioners in remote areas to board-certified specialists in academic teaching hospitals. We've all been alone, in need of a colleague to help answer questions or bounce ideas off. Our goal is that no veterinarian ever needs to feel alone. Since 2014, we have expanded from three to nine E/CC consultants, and began 24/7 service in May 2015. We strive to be a source of practical, immediate information. 

Our board-certified E/CC consultants are available 24/7/365. When you call us, you will be immediately connected with one of our ACVECC Diplomates, who can answer your questions and provide recommendations for treatment. Emergencies simply cannot wait. You don’t need to wait hours for a return call, and there is no up-charge for a STAT consultation. When you call, a Criticalist answers the phone and is there to help.

Anesthesia

Anesthesia services are available in two ways: either as individual case consultations for a specific patient, or as part of anesthesia protocol planning for your hospital. Anesthesia services are available 9a-5p CST, Mon-Fri, and should be planned in advance. Turn-around time is 24 hours or less.  Dr. Raffe can help your hospital to create new anesthesia protocols or update existing ones. For individual case consultations, Dr. Raffe can develop a tailored protocol for your patient.  Elements of the plan will include the following: 

  • Preanesthetic drugs and management 
  • Induction drugs and management 
  • Maintenance drugs and management 
  • Perioperative patient support including fluid therapy, temperature and ventilation support in addition to any unique patient management requirements. 
  • Patient monitoring and goal parameters 
  • Perioperative and postoperative pain control 
  • Recovery support and management 
  • Special needs

HOSPITAL ROUNDS:

Critical Consults provides unique learning and feedback opportunities for our hospitals. We can participate in scheduled, live hospital rounds to review cases, provide continuing education on a specific topic, or lead morbidity and mortality rounds.  These small group sessions are exclusive for your hospital, and can help improve patient care and informed decision-making backed by the most recent research.
